Our History & Values

HARC was founded in 1989 by a group of local people who couln't bear the thought of anyone spending Christmas cold, hungry, or alone. What started as a small community effort has grown into an annual lifeline for hundreds of people - run entirely by volunteers and supported by the generosity of Sheffield residents.

Our Story

In our early days, HARC operated from a small church hall, serving simple meals to a handful of guests. Over the years, with the help of volunteers, donors, and local organisations, we've expanded to offer full hot meals, clothing, essential services and signposting to ongoing support. Our work continues to be rooted in kindness and community spirit.

Our Values

  • Compassion - We treat everyone with warmth, empathy and respect.

  • Dignity - We believe every person deserves to be valued and listened to.

  • Inclusivity - Our doors are open to anyone in need, without judgement.

  • Community - We work hand-in-hand with local people, organisations and volunteers to make a difference.

  • Hope - We aim to give not just comfort for a day, but encouragement for the future.

Why We Continue

Even in a modern city, homelessness and isolation persist. Our commitment is as strong today as it was on day one: to be a safe place where people an feel cared for and connected.

A Note of Thanks

HARC wouldn't exist without the generosity of our volunteers, donors, and partners. Every hot meal served, every warm coat given, and every smile shared is thanks to you.
