Every year, as part of its Constitution, HARC make a financial gift to one or more of our partner charities with the same client group.
This year, we made a financial gift to StopGap Sheffield http://www.stopgapsheffield.
The Chair of StopGap Sheffield, Dr Ruth Grayson, has written about the impact this gift has made to StopGap-
Several months ago, StopGap received a generous donation [of £3k] from HARC, with whom it works in close partnership during the Christmas period. This sum has enabled us to pay for around 100 bednights in private B&B establishments in Sheffield, to enable our clients to have a good night’s sleep in warmth and safety and to work with other agencies to help resolve their longer term accommodation and other needs.
Just to give a single example: Jane was illegally evicted from her flat just before Christmas last year. She spent the next 4 months rough sleeping and sofa surfing. She had problems with depression and her homelessness made this worse. Through the Rough Sleeper service, she was referred to StopGap, and eventually was helped to secure her own tenancy.
Whilst Jane had been rough sleeping she had come up against constant barriers with trying to get the help she needed. She felt that there was no way to escape her chaotic lifestyle and had lost all her trust in services. StopGap gave her shelter when others had refused and this gave her hope and helped her to trust again.
This is one instance among many in which StopGap has been able to help minimise rough sleeping in our city, and to give individuals the ability to move forward in their lives. The grant from HARC has been invaluable for many others too.
